“I grew up in the Philippines watching all the Hollywood rom-coms with my mom,” Marie said. “Now that I have the opportunity to direct an Asian-led romantic comedy outside the traditional American studio system, it’s so exciting to lean into the cultural nuance, authenticity, and heart that global audiences are craving.”
Aside from Jasmine, the upcoming film will also star yao, Lou Diamond Philips, Tamlyn Tomita, and Airline Inthyrath.
The film will revolve around a working-class Filipino-American woman who falls for a man from a Chinese-Filipino dynasty. As their relationship blossoms, they will face various challenges, including class divides and prejudices among their respective families and communities.
According to the article, shooting will start in November, with principal locations in Manila and New York.
“Jasmine and yao bring a special combination of warmth, depth, and chemistry to their characters. I cannot wait to share our film with the world,” the filmmaker shared.
