The Ultimate Guide to Selecting the Right Shoes for Marathon Day

For runners preparing for a marathon, months of training go into getting ready for 42.2 kilometers. There is the mileage to build, the pace to work on, and the long runs to complete. But as race day approaches, there is another decision worth considering: what shoes will carry you through the distance?

With so many race-day shoes available, the choice can be overwhelming. While weight, cushioning, and responsiveness all have a role to play, the right shoe ultimately comes down to what works for the individual runner—from how it fits to how it feels after several hours on the road.

This is where HOKA’s Marathon Pack offers two different approaches to race-day footwear. The Cielo X1 3.0 and Rocket X 3 are both designed for road racing and can cover the full marathon distance, but they offer different ride characteristics.

For coach Dan Hilaria, run captain and lead strength-and-conditioning coach for the HOKA Run Club Philippines, the first consideration is simple: fit.

“Fit first, then function,” said coach Dan. “A marathon shoe can be fast, light, and highly cushioned, but if it doesn’t fit your foot properly, it’s probably not the right race-day shoe.”

A good fit allows runners to stay comfortable and consistent throughout the race. From there, factors such as pace and running style can help determine what kind of ride works best. Faster runners may prefer lighter, more responsive shoes, while runners expecting to spend more time on their feet may value cushioning and comfort more.

Footstrike, meanwhile, may not need as much attention as runners think. Rather than focusing too much on whether they are heel or forefoot strikers, coach Dan suggests paying attention to how the shoe actually feels while running.

“How the shoe feels when you run is more important,” he said.

The course is another factor to consider. A flat, straight marathon can offer a very different running experience from a course with frequent turns, hills, or uneven surfaces. In those situations, stability and grip can become more important.

“You want a shoe that matches the demands of the course, not just one that looks fast,” coach Dan noted.

The way a shoe feels can also change as the race progresses. After many kilometers, fatigue can affect a runner’s form and stride, making comfort and stability increasingly important.

“The rule of thumb is this: You don’t just want a shoe that feels fast, you want one that still feels good when you’re tired,” he explained.

That is why testing a race-day shoe before the marathon is an important part of preparation. Coach Dan recommends trying the shoe during an easy run, a faster or race-pace workout, and a long run. He personally aims to put around 15 to 25 kilometers into a shoe before race day to become familiar with how it feels.

The two shoes in HOKA’s Marathon Pack reflect these different considerations. The Cielo X1 3.0 features an aggressive rocker geometry and dual-layer PEBA foam for an energetic, responsive ride, while the Rocket X 3 has a wider dual-density PEBA base and a carbon plate with stabilizing winglets for a more supportive platform.

Ultimately, the right race-day shoe is one that fits well, feels good over distance, and matches the demands of the course.
