Only icons can get away with being referred to with just their first name andย still be the first (and often only) person that comes to mind. Oprah is easily one of these people. She is an icon, a legend, and now the first African American woman to receive the Cecil B. DeMille awardee.
Oprah’s ability to be eloquent and charming even when on-the-spot continues to baffle me. No one exudes confidence as she does while still remaining humble, her heart so genuinely turned to kindness and to always attempting to give her best to others. Despite hardships and watching from “the cheap seats” as a child, she has continued to push forward and emerge as an inspiration for people everywhere.
In her speech, she shows just how much her current demeanor was shaped by hope. How she fights every day because there is “a new day on the horizon” and how it is worth fighting for.
Oprah has been a bright spot for all of us, igniting hearts and minds with her words and her dreams for our shared future.
She rallies against injustice, siding with men and women alike who have had to utter #MeToo and dreams a future where no one has to ever say it again. She traces history, to Rosa Parks and Recy Taylor whose lives were pivotal in radical change and progress. And she even speaks up to include women who never had the chances to be written into history books, silenced women, women whom many have forgotten.
This speech completely blew us away. Especially the way she reminds us that even on the darkest of days, the sun is sure to crawl over and dispel the night.
