“Murder Mystery 2” Review: The Spitzes in Paris

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston fans are in for a treat with the recent release of “Murder Mystery 2”! The comedic duo reprises their roles as Nick and Audrey Spitz in this Murder Mystery sequel that takes us on a hilarious trip to Paris!

Just a quick recap, “Murder Mystery” follows long-time married couple Nick (Sandler) and Audrey (Aniston) Spitz, who becomes involved in a murder investigation as they impulsively join a luxurious yacht vacation with a group of wealthy guests. Since Audrey is a hairdresser and a fan of mystery books while Nick is a New York police officer who had failed his detective exam several times, their attempt to solve the crime puts them in a series of twists and turns, as well as a love triangle! With the pandemic’s setback to the release of part two, I’d say the film gave enough recap if you don’t have time to rewatch the first one.

Four years later, Nick and Audrey are back after solving their first murder mystery now as full-time detectives! Rooting from their overnight success though, the movie begins with our beloved couple struggling to get their private eye agency off the ground. When they receive The Maharaja or Vikram Shivan Govindan’s (Adeel Akhtar) invite to his private island for his wedding, they grab the opportunity once again to have an all-expense paid vacation that they badly needed. However, the Spitzes yet again get tangled in trouble when a dead body enters the scene delivered by an elephant.

In the first few minutes, I loved how relatable Nick and Audrey were (besides when they bicker as a couple) when it comes to freebies! Like, who would say no to a free trip to paradise? And the way they explored their suite is so me every time I check in to a hotel! Even how they snagged their welcome gifts reminded me of taking home mini bottles of shampoos and lotions from a hotel (lol)–except they got iPhones!

One of my favorite parts is Aniston and Sandler’s participation in Vik and his bride Claudette’s (Mélanie Laurent) entrance to their wedding ceremony in the form of a grand Bollywood dance number! Well, they were supposed to be part of it…if only they learned the choreography from the instruction video sent to their room. Unfortunately, Nick forgot to tell Audrey about it so they just went with it, sending me to the floor laughing! TBH, I’ve rewatched it multiple times and it still makes me burst into laughter!

Fellow Friends fans, the Spitzes in Paris is much like The One Where Joey Speaks French! So how did they get to Paris? Thanks to the bad guys who set up an exchange at the Arctic Tree Hump (Arc de Triomphe)! As seen in the trailer, Nick and Audrey greeted everyone with “bonjour!” after crashing into Café Procope, one of the oldest cafés in continuous operation. And as if ravaging one of the best restaurants in the city of love is not enough, they also bring chaos into Le Jules Verne, which sits on the second floor of the Eiffel tower!

In between the Bollywood festivities and the destruction of the symbol of Paris are axe-throwing, window jumping, and bungee jumping(?)! There was also a shower of money which might be a nod to Laurent’s role in the 2013 film “Now You See Me” (also set in Paris) as Alma Dray, a French Interpol agent who worked with F.B.I. agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) to catch The Four Horsemen. Remember their epic escape at 5 Pointz?

Overall, Audrey Spitz couldn’t have said it better: “Team Buffoon wins again” as everything they’ve ever dreamed of lands on their laps! They finally have a shot at their detective agency becoming successful…and an unforgettable experience on their long-awaited trip to Paris!
