Every year, Sinag Maynila gains prominence nationwide for its must-watch roster of full-length features, short films, and documentaries helmed by independent producers, up-and-coming directors, and student filmmakers. Among this year’s diverse lineup of shorts is Sino Kamukha Ko?, a simple yet sentimental narrative by writer-director Darlene Ballano and producer Alexis Tolosa.

In this heartwarming drama between two sisters, Mika takes on the role of a dutiful elder sister to an innocent second grader (Summer Latorre) whose school project prompts them to explore their family’s past. Here’s why this short film should be on your radar this year, alongside the rest of Sinag Maynila’s diverse entries:

A Tale of Two Kind Hearts

The 20-second teaser of Sino Kamukha Ko? already offers a tender perspective on Filipino families that’ll tug on our heartstrings. We see Summer’s character ask her ate, “Who does he look like, me or you?” To which Mika’s character warmly answers, “You. You have his smile.”

We’ve yet to find out who this mystery man is and what he means to the sisters. He could be their brother, father, grandfather, or even a distant relative that the younger sister hasn’t met yet. Still, we can’t help but smile at Summer and Mika’s sisterhood as they work on their family tree together.

No one can ever be fully ready to discover the bittersweet truths of their family lineage, especially at such a young age. Sino Kamukha Ko? reminds us how essential our siblings and sibling figures are in handling these realities with a hopeful heart. Our bond with our brothers, sisters, and relatives may be complex at times, but there’s nobody else we’d rather grow up with through thick and thin.
