Michael Keaton’s Birdman Leads 20th Critics Choice Movie Awards
There are many movies to watch out for in 2015 including Michael Keaton’s Birdman. After being released in August 2014, Birdman gained nods for its story and cast, leading to multiple nominations in the 20th Critics Choice Movie Awards, including Best Actor for Michael Keaton, Best Supporting Actor for Edward Norton, Best Supporting Actress for Emma Stone, Best Acting Ensemble, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy for Michael Keaton.
Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is a comedy led by Keaton who, in the movie, plays a washed-up Hollywood actor famous for being Birdman early in his career. The story is quite similar to his own career as he was cast by Tim Burton to play Batman in 1989.
In the movie, he hopes to reinvent his career by writing, directing and starring in an Broadway Adaptation of “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” where he is joined by his best friends: Zach Galifianakis, Edward Nortom, Andrea Riseborough, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts, among others.
Emma Stone, Keaton’s daughter, is a recovering drug addict who is in a relationship with Edward Norton. The movie shows the actor’s struggle to reinvent and follow through in Hollywood’s ever-changing world. Â In a stage preview of the play Keaton is working on, he uses a real gun as a prop and shoots his nose, which gives them a standing ovation and positive comments.
After recovering from the gunshot, he is shown on a window ledge looking at the birds outside. When Emma Stone comes into the room, Keaton is gone and she merely smiles as she gazes at the birds outside her window.Â
Overall, Birdman is actually a comedy and it is a relief to see Michael Keaton playing a more different role with the kind of depth and character that we haven’t seen in his previous movies.
The 20thAnnual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards is hosted by Super Bowl Legend Michael Strahan and will air live on RTL-CBS on January 16 at 730am with same day Encore at 830pm and 955pm. Birdman is set to be released in the Philippines in 2015.
