If you usually access Messenger through your browser, you may want to take note: Meta has confirmed that Messenger.com will be phased out as a messaging service starting April 2026.

The company also announced that the standalone Messenger desktop app will be discontinued as part of the change.
According to Meta, conversations previously accessed through Messenger.com will instead be redirected to facebook.com/messages. This means users can still send and receive messages on the web, but through Facebook’s main interface rather than a separate Messenger site.
What happens to Messenger users?
Meta clarified that messaging itself isn’t going away. The Messenger mobile app will remain fully operational, so those who prefer using Messenger on their phones can continue doing so as usual.
Meta also shared that users who access Messenger without a Facebook account will still be able to use the mobile app and keep their conversations.
For those concerned about past chats, Meta said chat history can be restored across platforms using a PIN, helping ensure messages remain accessible even after the transition.
Why the change?
While Meta did not cite a single reason, the move reflects a broader shift toward consolidating platforms. Over time, many users have leaned toward mobile-first communication, and streamlining services may allow the company to manage updates and security more efficiently.
For longtime users who preferred Messenger’s dedicated website, the shutdown may mark the end of a familiar way of messaging online. Still, conversations will continue through other channels, including the Facebook website and the mobile app.
The transition is set to begin in April 2026.
