Looks like it’s time to say goodbye to the Messenger desktop apps. Meta just announced that it’s officially phasing out its standalone Messenger apps for Windows and macOS by December 2025.

According to Meta’s support page, Mac users can continue using the app for 60 more days before it’s blocked completely. Meanwhile, Windows users are being notified that the app will stop working by December 14, 2025.
If you’ve checked recently, the apps have already been removed from the Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store. After the shutdown, Windows users can still message through the Facebook app or the Messenger web version, while Mac users will only be able to use Messenger on their browsers.
However, your chat history will still be safe—as long as you enable secure storage and set a PIN before switching to the web version. This keeps your messages synced across devices. You can find this under Privacy & Safety > End-to-end encrypted chats > Message storage in your settings.
Don’t have a Facebook account? No problem. You can still use Messenger by logging in directly at messenger.com.
This move is part of Meta’s ongoing effort to simplify its desktop apps. The Verge reports that the company also plans to replace the native WhatsApp Windows app with a web-based version soon.
