There’s a new “Ru Girl” in town, and she’s as sweet as a mango.
RuPaul’s Drag Race has officially returned this month for its 18th season. The award-winning reality series promises a brand new set of dynamic personalities, jaw-dropping runway looks, and unforgettable performances from the 14 diverse drag artists competing on the show.

Among this season’s contestants is Mandy Mango, a bubbly Filipino-American queen who brings a unique perspective to the competition as an entertainer who also works full-time in the healthcare field. There may be a few stark contrasts between her medical and artistic pursuits, but she has confidently spoken about her experiences in both fields on the show.
No matter how far Mandy goes on RuPaul’s Drag Race, it’s safe to say that Filipinos are already proud of the representation and advocacies she has spotlighted on multiple global platforms. As we await the show’s second episode, let’s get to know more about our new Filipina “Ru Girl” through these fun facts:
A Registered Nurse Who’s Always on the Clock

Aside from her creative outlets, Mandy takes pride in her notable contributions to the medical field that have made a lasting impact on the LGBTQIA+ community. Outside the world of drag, she’s a licensed nurse who specializes in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases and sexual health.
Mandy has made it her mission to be a prominent advocate for sex education and public health. Through her gigs as a keynote speaker and published author who also shines onstage, she has inspired many queer people of color (POC) to thrive in their respective industries and stand their ground alongside the communities they identify with.
Hailing from Philadelphia

Mandy’s journey in drag and healthcare began in Philadelphia, where she earned her stripes as a nurse in various state-wide clinics. She has taken on three meaningful roles in seven years since acquiring her license:
- An HIV clinical case manager in rural Philadelphia,
- The lead nurse at an infectious disease clinic in West Philadelphia, and
- Her current job, an HIV prevention clinical associate for healthcare professionals in the state.
We can’t help but applaud Mandy’s dedication and commitment to saving lives, which she has diligently managed on top of all her bookings as a drag performer.
On February 7, 2025, Mandy collaborated with the Council of Young Filipinx Americans in Medicine (CYFAM) for Birds, Bees, and Mango Trees, an inclusive talk on sex education (sex ed). This passion project allowed Mandy to connect with her kababayans in the States who share the same advocacies and initiatives that champion LGBTQIA+ rights.
Harmful misconceptions and taboos still surround conversations on sex ed and HIV awareness, especially in the Philippines. However, public figures like Mandy encourage us to take proper action and address these pressing issues as critically and mindfully in every way we can.
Mandy’s Ode to Pop Culture and Her Filipino Roots

Mandy’s drag always tells a unique story that highlights her Filipino identity, her remarkable work in healthcare, and the nerdy interests that add a quirky touch to her vibrant ensembles.
Her entrance look on RuPaul’s Drag Race, for instance, is an extensive showcase of her identity, voice, and craft as a multi-passionate queer artist:
- Warm colors that resemble a mango, one of the most beloved fruits in the Philippines (which happens to be her drag name, too),
- An elevated take on a nurse’s uniform, a nod to her day job, and
- Hair and makeup that draw inspiration from Nurse Joy, a beloved character from the Pokémon franchise.
Now a full-fledged “Ru Girl,” Mandy is making the most out of every moment she has on the international stage. She joins Ongina, Manila Luzon, Aura Mayari, Anetra, and the late Jiggly Caliente, among others, in raising the Philippine flag on the critically acclaimed American series.
