Esports Might Soon Be Offered As A College Degree In The Philippines

The first-ever degree program in electronic sports (esports) in the Philippines is currently being developed. Which means, you might finally have a good reason for your mom asking why you spend so much time on “those games.”

The Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) and esports and gaming agency Tier One Entertainment are collaborating on a curriculum for a 4-year Bachelor of Science in ESports degree.

The gaming agency’s chief executive officer Tryke Gutierrez shared the news on a Facebook post. He explained that should the curriculum gain approval from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) it will offer 2 tracks: game development and esports management.

They are not yet at liberty to discuss the subjects under the program but Gutierrez claimed that “if this goes well, we might have a full course available by 2020.”

“The goal has always been to create more opportunities for gamers in Asia. If this curriculum gets approved, we won’t just be providing post career opportunities for gaming, but we will have a new generation of graduates ready to work in the esports industry,” Gutierrez said.

They will be passing the final esports curriculum design to CHED on March 4.
