LRT-1 passengers may face potential fare increases soon, as the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) has filed a petition to implement fare hikes.
The operator intends to raise the boarding fee from P13.29, with an additional P1.21 per kilometer, to a P18.15 boarding fee, with an additional P1.65 per kilometer. This translates into an average fare increase of approximately P7.48 per passenger.
If the petition is approved, the maximum fare for a single end-to-end journey is expected to increase from P45 to P60, potentially taking effect in April of this year.
LRMC president and CEO Enrico Benipayo backed the proposed fare hike by noting the improvements in the LRT-1, including the rail lines, facilities, additional trains, and the construction of theย first phase of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension.
The proposed fare hike has been endorsed to the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) Rail Regulatory Unit, which is tasked with making the final decision within 30 days of the public hearing held on January 9.
