2024 Wrapped: Local Celebrity Breakups This Year

While some love stories begin, others have to close a chapter in their lives. The year 2024 has seen some of the most redefining moments and surprising announcements—from blossoming romantic relationships and wedding news to unfortunate breakups that have shocked the nation. Sadly, some of our favorite celebrity couples called it quits.

Here is a list of local celebrity breakups this year.

Jericho Rosales and Kim Jones

In January, the godfather of celebrity couple Jericho Rosales and Kim Jones, Ricco Ocampo, confirmed that the couple broke up in 2019 but had maintained good friends since then.

“While the friendship between the two remains, they have decided it is time to lead separate lives. They are encouraging each other to grow, albeit in different directions. It was a mutual decision, an amicable separation, dealt with grace and maturity by both parties,” Ricco wrote, assuring fans that the split was amicable and they wished the best for each other.

He added: “The two are filled with gratitude for the memories they’ve made together and the lessons they’ve learned. They have journeyed through the separation with the utmost respect and care toward one another precisely because Echo and Kim are the best of friends and love each other like family.”

Bea Alonzo and Dominic Roque

Meanwhile, Boy Abunda confirmed in February that Bea Alonzo and Dominic Roque had broken up.

The popular host revealed the news on his talk show Fast Talk with Boy Abunda: “Ako’y nalungkot ho talaga dahil madalas, pag nagkikita kami ni Bea ay nagkakakwentuhan ho kami tungkol sa buhay, tungkol sa kanila, their marriage plans, etc (I was really saddened because often, when Bea and I meet, we talk about life, about their relationship, and their marriage plans). So, I was shocked… As we talk today, yes, hiwalay po si Dominic at saka si Bea (Dominic and Bea has broken up).

A few days later, Bea and Dominic confirmed that they mutually decided to end their engagement.

“Unfortunately, some even confirmed our breakup without our consent, and some created ridiculous stories that had no basis and were utterly false, so we felt the need to share this announcement with great sadness for our peace of mind and our families,” they said in a now-deleted joint Instagram post.

The former couple began dating in 2021 and got engaged in 2023. However, they were met with breakup rumors after eagle-eyed netizens noticed that the 37-year-old actress was no longer wearing her engagement ring.

Sarah Lahbati and Richard Gutierrez

Following a slew of breakup speculations since late 2023, Sarah Lahbati herself confirmed that she and her husband Richard Gutierrez are no longer together. The former long-term couple confirmed their romance in August 2012 and got married in March 2020.

“Yeah, there’s nothing to hide. It’s pretty clear to the public, ‘no? Both of us are – I think,” Sarah said in an ABS-CBN interview with MJ Felipe in March.

Prior to this confirmation, the Swiss-born Filipina actress shared that they had been co-parenting with the Incognito actor despite not being on “speaking terms.”

Kyline Alcantara and Mavy Legaspi

In 2023, young couple Kyline Alcantara and Mavy Legaspi were slammed with breakup rumors after netizens noticed that the two stopped posting each other on social media.

However, it was only in August that the 22-year-old actress addressed the real status between them.

“In every relationship naman po that I have or had, whether it’s professionally or friendly man or romantic, I always try to learn something from it, both the good and the bad experiences,” Kyline said in an interview with Boy Abunda.

She continued, “Right now, I think we should all move on from that experience, and I will treasure that moment po kasi siyempre (because, of course) it made me who I am today with all that happened.”

Kyline is currently dating Kobe Paras.

Maris Racal and Rico Blanco

Fans of the celebrity couple were shocked when Maris Racal herself emotionally confirmed that they had broken up, adding that the pain of their breakup was the “loneliest, emptiest” weeks she has ever experienced in her life.

“I’m so scared ‘cause if I announce it, then it’s real. But yeah, Rico and I are over,” she said.

The 27-year-old actress continued: “Rico and I, our universe was so beautiful. It was so full of love, laughter, and music, everything. Its spontaneity, everything. Sa five years namin together (In our five years of being together), we were always on the same page. Always on the same page. I don’t know what happened to me. Maybe I turned to the next page and saw a new perspective sa life. I had visions of who I want to become, how I want to evolve. I’m so curious about the world and the truth is, I am going through changes. And alam natin na change is either good or bad. But what I hate about change is that it’s inevitable. ‘Di mo siya matatakasan. And wala ka nang ibang [magagawa] kundi (You can’t run away from it) you have to face it and confront it. ‘

With a 24-year age gap, Maris and Rico made fans root for them when they publicly announced their relationship in 2021.

Paolo Contis and Yen Santos

Breakup speculations arose when Yen Santos deleted her birthday greeting for Paolo Contis and unfollowed him on her Instagram account. However, it was only in November when the actor confirmed his relationship status.

In an episode of Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, the 40-year-old actor revealed that he is single.

Previously, the actor confirmed his relationship with Yen despite not clarifying the real status behind his separation from fellow actress and ex, LJ Reyes.

Sue Ramirez and Javi Benitez

Sue Ramirez and Victorias City, Negros Occidental Mayor Javi Benitez have also called it quits after a five-year relationship.

In early November, the politician shared that they had broken up four months prior to his public announcement.

“For the last five years, as Inday Sue and Toto Javi, two Negrosanons from different worlds, we built a world of our own. It was full of love, dreams, laughter, and all the ups and downs in a relationship where you shared your life with someone. There were no outside forces, just two hearts finding their way together,” he said.

He continued: “I wish her nothing but happiness and the love she deserves. Here’s to those good times, held close to my heart and to the grace of whatever lies ahead. I hope she continues to share her God-given talent with many more, touching lives as she has touched mine.”

Ai-Ai Delas Alas and Gerald Sibayan

Also in November, Ai-Ai Delas Alas emotionally confirmed that she and Gerald Sibayan have officially parted ways.

In an interview with Boy Abunda, the 60-year-old actress shared that they had broken up since October: “Hiwalay na kami. Last month pa. Basta hindi ko makakalimutan. October 14, nag-chat siya, madaling araw sa Pilipinas. Yun nga. Sinabi niya na gusto niya magkaanak at hindi na siya happy (We’ve been separated since last month. I can’t forget it. He messaged me on October 14, it was midnight in the Philippines. He told me that he wanted to have a baby and he’s not happy).”

She also revealed that they tried to conceive a baby through in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, the procedure was unsuccessful, which she said deeply “hurt” her husband.

“Alam naman niya na bago pa niya ako pakasalan na hindi na ako magkakaanak, but I really tried my best kasi meron kami in vitro kahit mahina yung eggs ko (He already knew before he married me that I would never have children, but I really tried my best because we had in vitro even though my eggs are weak),” she continued, adding that she also had a gut feeling that there was a third party involved.

Anthony Jennings and Jam Villanueva

After breakup rumors circulating on social media, Anthony Jennings confirmed the end of his seven-year relationship with non-showbiz girlfriend Jam Villanueva.

When asked by entertainment reporter Allan Sancon, the actor confirmed that they had broken up months ago: “Ako ‘yung may pagkukulang do’n. Problema ko ‘yon and dapat ko ‘yon ayusin mag-isa (I was the one who had shortcomings. That is my problem and I should fix it by myself).”

He also clarified that him and his Incognito co-star Maris Racal are just friends: “Magkaibigan lang po kami [ni Maris] and sana matigil na rin ‘yung mga gano’ng issues (Maris and I are just friends, I hope the issues about us would stop).”
