Unless you’ve been living under a rock, surely you have heard of the feud that’s been going on between reality TV star Kim Kardashian and Grammy-award winning artist Taylor Swift.
Well, here’s a little primer if you’re not caught up. It all really, actually, started in 2009 when hip hop artist Kanye West, now husband of Kim K., interrupted Taylor Swift who was in the middle of her award acceptance speech at the MTV VMAs, saying that Beyoncé was better deserving of the “Best Female Video” award that was bestowed on Taylor. Feelings were of course hurt, songs were written, and was just basically the start of what seems like a non-ending feud.
Although the past years have seen a reconciliation between the two (it was a long time ago anyway and people do move on), it could really just be thing for the cameras. Because when Kanye West dropped his latest album, many people were appalled by the lines from one of his songs, Famous. It pertained to Taylor Swift: “Taylor and I might still have sex” and “I made that b*tch famous.” Again, it was like 2009 all over again, Kanye discrediting TayTay from all her hardwork to get where she is now.
You can listen to Famous here, and hear the infamous lines for yourself:
Even the music video for the song is quite scandalous (though I personally love it), and you can watch it through this link. It’s a bit NSFW, just a word of warning. The Famous video features other “famous” celebrities (or their wax figures or look-alikes atleast), all naked lying alongside each other in one massive bed. The celebrities featured in the video include Donald Trump, George W. Bush, Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Amber Rose, and, wait for it…Taylor Swift lying naked beside Kanye.
Taylor was obviously unhappy about it on top of the whole song lyric fiasco, but Kanye claims he asked permission from the pop star to write about her in Famous. Which Taylor denied.
She even made an indirect response to Kanye during her 2016 Grammy Album of the Year acceptance speech, saying: “I want to say to the young woman out there, there are going to be people along the way who try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you will look around and you will know it was you and the people who love you who put you there, and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”
But here’s where it gets messy. Amidst Taylor’s denial that she approved of the lyrics, Kim Kardashian a.k.a. Mrs. West swooped in to defend her husband. In a swift move (pun totally intended) that broke the internet once more, Kim uploaded to Snapchat a video of Kanye on the phone with Taylor Swift—proof that he really did ask permission. Taylor was even caught saying “I really appreciate you telling me about this. That’s really nice.”
Here is a video of Kim’s snaps:
Kind of awkward for Taylor. And now everybody, including celebrities, are weighing in and taking sides. What. Mayhem. And all of this are happening just after Taylor broke up with her DJ boyfriend Calvin Harris and two weeks after was suddenly discovered to be in a relationship with Tom Hiddleston. I mean. Come on.
Idk what’s going to happen now, but the good thing to take away from all this? THE MEMES. Of course there are memes! Here are some of the funny ones we’re found floating around the internet:
Well played, Kim. Well played.
Ahh, the gift of celebrity feuds and the internet. What a time to be alive.
