John Amores has been suspended from the upcoming Commissioner’s Cup of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) following his involvement in a shooting incident in Laguna.
PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial and legal counsel Atty. Ogie Narvasa announced on October 11 that the NorthPort guard was suspended without pay for all his games in the league’s 49th season due to “conduct detrimental to the league.”
They stressed that Amores must undergo counseling and secure clearance from his counselor in order to return to PBA.
“Furthermore, in order for Amores to be allowed to play again in the PBA, he must, without delay, submit to counseling to address his anger and violent tendencies. Clearance to play must be obtained from his counselors. Choice of the counseling program of Amores should be with the approval of the PBA, and the program must continue until cleared and terminated by the counselors,” Narvasa noted.
Despite his suspension, Amores is allowed to practice and participate in team activities. He is also entitled to receive a portion of his salary.
“Isolating him will not be helpful and healthy for his rehabilitation,”ย he added.
Marcial emphasized that the PBA and the management of NorthPort are “strongly against any kind of violence on and off the court and also advocate responsible and safe handling of guns.”
In September, Amores and his brother got into a heated argument while playing basketball in Brgy. Salac, Lumban, Laguna, which escalated into a shooting incident. They voluntarily surrendered and were charged with attempted homicide but wereย released from custody after posting bail.
