Jake Zyrus’s Ex Alyssa Quijano Joins Idol Philippines, Finally Addresses Breakup

After staying away from the showbiz limelight and keeping silent about her breakup with Jake Zyrus two years ago, Alyssa Quijano finally returns to audition for local singing competition Idol Philippines.

In the episode that aired Sunday, April 18, Quijano faced judges Regine Velasquez, James Reid, Moira Dela Torre, and Vice Ganda and spoke briefly about her relationship with Zyrus (who, at the time they were together, was still named Charice Pempengco).

Quijano shared that she sacrificed a lot for her relationship with Zyrus, including putting a hold on her dreams to be a singer. “Nawala yung Alyssa na kilala ko (I lost the Alyssa I knew),” she said.

“After the breakup, noong medyo nakaka-move on na ako, I learned a lot from that relationship. Alam ko na ang hirap din ng pinagdaanan niya. Ang I believe pareho kaming natuto sa pagkakamali namin.”

She also revealed that she is currently finishing her medical technology course.

“Ngayon (Now), I’m pursuing my dreams. I’m becoming who I really am,” she said.

“Now that I’m sharing my story for the first time, this is the time I’m leaving my past behind,” she added.

When asked about how she has been coping after the breakup, Quijano claimed she is doing well and is happy to finally start singing again. She also confirmed that she has moved on to a new relationship.

She then proceeded to blow the judges away with her rendition of “Araw Gabi,” originally sang by Regine Velasquez.

“I have to say, you did it perfectly. I loved the way you sang it, you gave it your own twist, you gave it your own version.

I am so happy you’re back. You are meant to do this,” Velasquez said of Quijano’s performance.

Moira Dela Torre chimed in: “Never ever ever put your dreams on hold ever again.

Because this is clearly for you.

Quijano earned four “Yes” votes from the panel, qualifying her to the next round of the competition.

Prior to Idol Philippines, Quijano joined X Factor Philippines in 2012 as part of six-piece girl group A.K.A. JAM.
