I’m sure that this has been on everyone’s minds, but credit must be given to Iza Calzado for finally voicing out the opinion on Darna’s “skimpy” outfit.

As initially reported on ABS-CBN News, Iza was in an interview with Karen Davila on ANC’s Headstart when the topic of who will be the next Darna was raised. Karen talked about how hard it is to cast the perfect actress to play the iconic superheroine, and Iza replied, “So hard kasi naka-bikini siya!” (“So hard because Darna wears a bikini!”)
Iza recommended that the costume should be changed, mentioning superheroines like Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel whose costumes are not as revealing or catered for the male gaze. She believes that this can help “widen, broaden the choices” of actresses to agree to the role.

“Not everybody will be comfortable,” she said. “It’s also hard to hit that perfect Darna body that they want. So, it’s something that can be [changed] in my opinion.”
“It’s hard to fight justice in a bikini,” she continued, cracking a joke about the impracticality of the outfit. “There’s a lot of injustice that could happen!”
Two years ago, Rex Ravelo, son of late Darna creator Mars Ravelo, told ABS-CBN News that the new Darna will be much more covered up. However, the three major elements of Darna’ costume will remain: her winged headpiece, the two stars on the bra top, and the bahag (loincloth).
