Gregory Maguire Announces “Wicked” Prequel—Here’s What Fans Can Expect

If you’re still humming “Defying Gravity” long after walking out of the theater, there’s something new coming your way from the world of Wicked.

Gregory Maguire, the author who first reimagined Oz through the eyes of Elphaba back in 1995, is releasing another addition to his ever-expanding Oz universe—and this time, the spotlight is on the future Good Witch herself.

Set to be published on September 29, 2026, by HarperCollins, Galinda: A Charmed Childhood explores the early life of the character many fans know as Glinda. It follows her as the youngest daughter in a noble family and hints at how dancing became her escape from a childhood that’s comfortable on the surface but far more complicated beneath the surface.

The book comes as a companion to Maguire’s earlier prequel, Elphie, released this year. Designed as a deluxe limited-edition hardcover, Galinda will span 256 pages and feature stenciled edges and custom endpapers—details collectors will likely appreciate.

Once released, this will mark Maguire’s ninth novel set in Oz. It precedes his original four-book series and the more recent Maracoor trilogy, continuing his long-running exploration of the world beyond the Yellow Brick Road.

His first novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, inspired the hit Broadway musical in 2003, which eventually led to a two-part movie adaptation. Its first film, Wicked, premiered on November 22, 2024, earning 10 Oscar nominations and winning Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

The second installment of the film adaptation, Wicked: For Good, premiered on November 19, 2025. The cast included Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible.
