‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Will Feature Lots of Kingdoms and Direwolves

In real life, the world was less unified as we go back in time. The same can be said for the fictional world of GRRM. In a recent interview, the author revealed that the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel will feature not 7, not 12, but 100 different kingdoms!

“We talk about the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros; there were Seven Kingdoms at the time of Aegon’s Conquest,” Martin says. “But if you go back further then there are nine kingdoms, and 12 kingdoms, and eventually you get back to where there are a hundred kingdoms — petty kingdoms — and that’s the era we’re talking about here,” says George R.R. Martin.

He also confirmed that one of those kingdoms belonged to the Starks, which means you’ll get to see cute direwolves if you’re starting to miss Ghost.

If you consider yourself a Lannister, you’d be sad to hear that there won’t be any Lannisters in the show as Casterly Rock was still being ruled by the Casterlys during that period. “The Lannisters aren’t there yet, but Castlery Rock is certainly there; it’s like the Rock of Gibraltar. It’s actually occupied by the Casterlys — for whom it’s still named after in the time of Game of Thrones,” explained Martin.
