In real life, the world was less unified as we go back in time. The same can be said for the fictional world of GRRM. In a recent interview, the author revealed that the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel will feature not 7, not 12, but 100 different kingdoms!

โWe talk about the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros; there were Seven Kingdoms at the time of Aegonโs Conquest,โ Martin says. โBut if you go back further then there are nine kingdoms, and 12 kingdoms, and eventually you get back to where there are a hundred kingdoms โ petty kingdoms โ and thatโs the era weโre talking about here,โ says George R.R. Martin.
He also confirmed that one of those kingdoms belonged to the Starks, which means youโll get to see cute direwolves if you’re starting to miss Ghost.
If you consider yourself a Lannister, youโd be sad to hear that there wonโt be any Lannisters in the show as Casterly Rock was still being ruled by the Casterlys during that period. “The Lannisters arenโt there yet, but Castlery Rock is certainly there; itโs like the Rock of Gibraltar. Itโs actually occupied by the Casterlys โ for whom itโs still named after in the time of Game of Thrones,” explained Martin.
