Fujifilm X Series: The Return of a Sleeping Giant

I fervently and actively asked for this assignment when I found out about it and even I think to the point of annoyance just to get it. I even booked a vacation leave from my daytime job for it. All this trouble for this lens: the Fujinon XF 56mm f1.2 APD (PHP76,990), a lens that I learned about online during one of the biggest photography exhibits of 2014, Photokina. When I found out that it would be at the product launch, I knew I just had to be there!

I was not disappointed by the output of the Fujifilm XT1 Graphite Silver Edition combined with the excellent Fujinon XF 56mm f1.2 APD. I only had a couple of minutes to figure the camera out, but even when shot wide open at f1.2 and at ISO 6400, it still came out sharp and clean. You might have to spend more than PHP100,000 for this combination, but this price is very reasonable for full-time professional fashion, studio and wedding photographers.

What is a fast camera without a fast lens? Fujifilm also released a lens that would be welcome to any professional photographer’s camera bag: the Fujinon XF 50-140 f2.8 R LM OIS WR (that was a mouthful), which is also perfect for wedding and sports photographers.

Fujifilm also invited world-renowned street photographers Vineet and Rohit Vohra who shared their passion for photography, their stories and the reason why they chose Fujifilm cameras.

Our local pool of talents and X-Photographers (from left to right) – street photographer Rommel Bundalian, landscape photographer Randall Cipriano, fashion photographer Niko Villegas and conceptual photographer Jan Gonzales – also shared their stories and experiences using Fujifilm cameras. These masters prove that bigger is not always better in the world of photography.

So, why is this the return of a sleeping giant? Fujifilm was big during the days of film. With the advent of digital photography, many brands who could not cope died out one by one; Fujifilm was no exception. Fujifilm would have been lost, but the development of the first Fujifilm Finepix X100 and other cameras paved the way for a huge comeback that gained the attention and traction of professional photographers along with numerous awards and worldwide recognition. During the launch, one lucky guest also won a Fujifilm Finepix X100, which was handed out by the father of the X100 himself, Mr. Hiroshi Kawahara.

Fujifilm is on the roll, creating the system that a lot of photographers want; a capable camera that has both the looks and the functionality. What makes me want to own one is the fact that Fujifilm also listens to its customers by providing software updates even if the camera is no longer in production.

If you are looking for the perfect camera to take that wonderful wedding photo without the need of post-processing or if you want a classic film look for your blog or travel photos without the need for Instagram, keep Fujifilm in mind – that small and sexy Fujifilm X30 in particular.
