Eat Bulaga Hosts Allegedly Offended Muslims for Wearing a Traditional Muslim Garment as Halloween Costume

Halloween is one of the anticipated events in October, especially for parents (like me), as we get to dress up our children with some cool costumes. Some of us go for traditional attire while others get creative and use theme-inspired costumes.

However, Eat Bulaga hosts Joey de Leon and Sen. Tito Sotto, were apparently criticized for wearing Keffiyeh a traditional Middle Eastern headdress (usually worn to protect their skin from sunburn, dust, and sand) and a thawb (an ankle-length Arab garment generally worn by Muslim men to the Mosques), as their costumes during their Halloween special yesterday, October 31, 2015.

According to Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Governor Mujiv Hataman, through an official statement, he thought of this act as “insensitive” and asked for a public apology.

Hataman also added: “On behalf of the Filipino Moro people, we demand that producers and hosts of the noontime show issue a public apology.”

Moreover, the ARMM governor said, “This display betrays an insensitivity by these hosts, as they equated the Muslim garb as a costume to be feared, in the way that zombies and ghouls are to be feared.”

On the other hand, other hosts wore traditional Halloween costumes like Incredible Hulk (Anjo Yllana), Anabelle (Ryzza Mae) and of course, the phenomenal AlDub’s (Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza as Yaya Dub), costumes depicted Edward Cullen and Bella Swan of Twilight.
