The Do’s and Don’ts When Watching a UAAP Game

The Do’s and Don’ts When Watching a UAAP Game

The UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) season will be back on a roll this year starting July 12 where 8 universities in the country contend to win the General Champions title now on its 77th year and with the theme “Unity In Excellence”. This season, the participating schools comprise of Adamson University (ADu), Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), Far Eastern University (FEU), National University (NU), University of the Philippines (UP), and University of Santo Tomas (UST). It will be hosted by the University of the East (UE).

What makes my college life epic so far? The UAAP games! It is one of the most awaited and exciting sporting events in the country. Hundreds and thousands of fans flock to Araneta Coliseum and MOA Arena rooting to cheer for the teams of their preference, if not their alma maters.

Do you think your school’s got spirit? Are you ready to once again hoard the arenas in your favored school colors? Let’s get ready to rumble!

The Do’s and Don’ts When Watching a UAAP Game

1) DON’T purchase tickets from unaccredited ticket booths/dealers, or worse… scalpers.

Tickets are normally sold at the ticket booths in Araneta Coliseum or MOA Arena, if not online. Some are sold at the participating universities, but only for students of that institution. Scalpers (dealers who sell tickets at very high and, most of the time, unreasonable prices) are everywhere and chances are they will sell you fake tickets; so be careful.

2) DO know where to sit.

The arena is split in half. The sides of the teams are determined here. Do sit in the area of the school you’re rooting for where you can cheer with fellow fans of the same team that you are supporting.

3) DON’T forget to wear your school colors/shirts loud and proud.

This is one of the simplest things you can do to show support for your school of choice. Make sure you wear neutral colors like black or white if not, so it won’t match with any of the colors of the opposing teams.

4) DO know your school’s cheers and players.

You will spot cheerleaders in your area’s bleachers, particularly during basketball and volleyball games. Cheerleaders are there to uplift the school spirit. The players will thank supporters for that later on, so cheer whole-heartedly with them! The school cheers are just one of the things that make a UAAP game very lively.

5) DON’T miss out on the half-time ganaps.

During basketball matches, cheerleaders have their own little exhibitions. Watch them toss and fly as they show off their love for their school through their performances. Cheer along if you can!

6) DO know the rules and regulations of the game.

This will give you a better understanding of the match, plus figure out the perfect time to cheer or not cheer (e.g., shooting/scoring).

7) DON’T be insensitive.

Be careful with your remarks, especially regarding the opposing teams. After all, you wouldn’t want to unintentionally pick a fight with anyone, right? UAAP games can get very tense, but keep the fun clean.

8) DO watch with your friends.

Your friends are the people you can be comfortable being loud around. UAAP games are the perfect places to make some noise!

9) DON’T disrespect the opposing team if yours lost.

A game’s a game. Your team will bounce back next time! Values and good sportsmanship comes a long way, both in and out of the court.

10)  DO have fun!

You know you had a great time when you talk about what happened during the game the moment you exit the arena, and even an hour or so after the game! The following day, you might experience some body pain or lose your voice from all of the cheering, but a UAAP game is one heck of an experience, so be proud of it either way!
