PSA: Don’t leave your alcohol in the car, otherwise this might happen

Aside from face masks and face shields, sanitizers and alcohol have become must-have items against the pandemic. But even products that are meant to protect us can cause accidents, especially when not handled properly.

On September 28, Joyce Anne Canlas posted on Facebook about an incident where a bottle of alcohol reportedly exploded in a car due to extreme heat.

“Basag ang salamin, butas ang upuan, damaged din yung bubong. Magingat po at baka mangyari rin ito sainyo, lalo na at marami talagang nagiiwan ng alcohol sa kotse ngayong pandemic,” she wrote.

(Rough translation: The glass was broken, the seat had a hole, and the roof was damaged. Be careful because this might also happen to you especially since a lot of people leave alcohol in their cars during the pandemic.)

According to Canlas, this happened in a warehouse located in Cainta, Rizal. The car was parked in an area without shade, and her boyfriend left the bottle on the passenger seat.

Alcohol is flammable. As a precaution, the bottle should be kept tightly closed and it must be store at temperatures not exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.

A report by Accuweather showed that the temperature in Metro Manila that day ranged from 26 to 34 degrees Celsius. There is a possibility that the heat triggered the explosion.

The Food and Drug Administration of the Philippines (FDA) reminded everyone to properly store alcohol bottles in order to prevent any accidents.

FDA Director-General Eric Domingo said the FDA will release an advisory to warn the public that flammable substances like alcohol should be kept in proper conditions to avoid accidents.
