Do you think this will be the solution for EDSA traffic?

If you’re living in Metro Manila, you definitely know how stressful plying EDSA could be. It seems that the avenue is cursed with never-ending traffic (may forever talaga sa EDSA!). This prompted one commuter named Caleb Cosico to give his take on solving EDSA traffic. He showed it via a series of illustrated images which were posted on Waterdiet Facebook page. The album was titled Dear MMDA (A Proposal).

The main point of his suggestion was the introduction of enclosed and exclusive spaces for PUVs on the innermost lanes instead of the usual outer lanes. He thinks this can be a solution to commuters who stand on and block the lanes when waiting for buses or jeeps.

But wait–how will the commuters reach the designated stops? Caleb explained in one of the photos that we can make use of overpasses that will connect the bus stop to the street. He believes that this will prevent pedestrians from loitering on the road. However, a few netizens commented about how difficult it will be for pregnant women, senior citizens, and PWDs to go up the stairs.

Apart from the exclusive lanes, he also suggested that buses could be deployed based on a schedule. According to the illustration, this is “to make sure there won’t be too many of them on the road.”

When we asked him what inspired the idea, Caleb said that he has been reading up on articles about the public transportation systems in other countries. He also added that witnessing their transportation system gave him hope about solving the traffic problems in our own country.

The illustrator also emphasized that in order to make traffic a lot better, we should start by disciplining ourselves. “A little inconvenience, a little elbow grease, a little discipline can make a huge difference,” he said.
