In a statement made by Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Monday, November 9th, 2020, Debold Sinas, infamous for his “mañanita” gathering that drew a ton of flak, was named the next Philippine National Police chief. Despite the criminal complaints against him, Roque confirmed that his appointment would begin the next day, November 10th, Tuesday.
According to Roque, Sinas was chosen because of how big a help he was in the war on drugs, something he would continue to push for in his new position. “”President Duterte has been saying for a long time what a big help he has been to the war on drugs,” Roque said according to Rappler.
He will be replacing Gen. Camilo Cascolan who will be retiring on Tuesday, November 10th.
Debold Sinas was heavily criticized and even had complaints filed against him for lavishly celebrating his birthday despite the lockdown procedures in place. Photos of the celebration were scattered all over social media, leading netizens to call him out on his hypocrisy during one of the strictest lockdowns and quarantines being enforced throughout Metro Manila and the Philippines at the time.

Despite the public ire he faced because of the surprise party and gathering, President Duterte, through his Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, said that he has full faith in Sinas and trusts him to carry on the initiatives the president set at the beginning of his term. “No one is perfect…. The President believes that Chief Sinas will be effective in his role. Let’s trust the President on this decision,” Roque said, explaining that the President didn’t have to explain who and why he appointed Sinas and his other appointments.
