Davao’s New Bus System: Here’s Everything You Need to Know About It

If you’ve commuted in Davao in the past year, you’ll know the struggle of traffic and hopping on that jeep. However, the chaos of daily commutes in Davao might just soon be a thing of the past. On the 125th anniversary of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), President Marcos and Secretary Jaime Bautista unveiled the start of a Php 73.4-billion transformation: the Davao Public Transport Modernization Program (DPTMP), a landmark project set to redefine public transport across Mindanao.

The Future of Commuting Starts Here

The DPTMP isn’t just about acquiring new buses. It’s a full-scale, city-wide overhaul. Backed by the Asian Development Bank, this 672-kilometer high-capacity bus network will:

  • Introduce 386 electric buses, 531 regular buses, and 188 mini-buses

  • Build dedicated bus lanes (à la EDSA Busway) separated by concrete barriers for uninterrupted travel

  • Feature nine feeder routes, eight intra-urban routes, and direct links to Panabo City and Davao del Norte

  • Add new depots, intermodal terminals, and pedestrian lanes

  • Establish a driving school to professionalize the transport workforce

What it Means For Davaoeños

According to Secretary Bautista, this is the “metamorphosis of public transport” in Mindanao. For daily commuters, it means:

  • Shorter travel times

  • Cashless payments

  • Cleaner air

  • Increased connectivity across key commercial, urban, and rural areas

More than just easing traffic, the system aims to spur economic growth by improving mobility between Davao and surrounding cities.

What’s Being Built (And Where)

The four contract packages signed include the development of major depots and terminals across:

  • Calinan, Buhangin, Toril, Sasa, Sto. Niño, and Bunawan

  • Toril Intermodal Terminal

  • Upgraded bus stops, lanes, and pedestrian zones

This infrastructure will support the seamless flow of public utility vehicles across Metro Davao and beyond.

Timeline: When Will It Start?

The DOTr targets partial operations by Q4 2025 and full rollout by 2026. For Davaoeños who’ve been waiting for a reliable and future-forward public transport system, the countdown has officially begun.
