DASH Diet: Will You Get into the Hype?

Nowadays, the word diet comes in many forms: Atkins, South Beach, After-six, Vegan, Raw Food, and Crash (does that count? Tee-hee) among many others. You may have tried some of these and if they worked, well then good for you! But if for some reason they won’t suit you, like they aren’t budget-friendly, or you simply can’t stick to the plan or something, then you can always try something else of course! There are a lot of options available and to say that you’ve given up is plain laziness.

If you find that the diet programs out there are too complicated (or superficial) to follow, maybe this new diet program called the DASH Diet (short for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) will suit you. Now you might be thinking, “Sounds grandma-ish so why bother?” This diet is actually created by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in 1997 to help combat hypertension and encourage a healthy meal plan for Americans. On the other hand, this diet has also been found as good for slowing down weight gain among young adults. It comprises of eating high-protein foods, fruits and veggies, low-fat dairy products, fish, poultry and whole grains. Nothing new really, it’s just that they put a name on it.

Another thing is that this diet will make you lower your daily sodium intake to one teaspoon a day, so you might wanna give up (or at least hold off) your favorite potato chips or french fries if you want to try this diet.

DASH Diet is becoming the rave in America. US News and World Report Magazine reported that the DASH diet received top honors in both Best Diet Overall and Best Diabetes Diet. But if you’re thinking that this will drop you a jean size in one week, stop your fantasies because that will not happen. This program works best to sustain a healthy lifestyle; the weight loss part only comes second. Well at least it sounds more realistic compared to other diets that might do your body more harm than good.

Now I’ll leave this question up to you: to DASH or to Crash? (pun intended)
