Breaking Toxic Cycles: Why Carlos Yulo’s Take on Parental Boundaries Resonates With Gen Z

For countless years, traditional Filipino culture has bestowed upon parents the indisputable right to unconditional respect—no questions asked. Phrases like “magulang mo pa rin ’yan” are constantly used to subdue children who dare to oppose parental authority.

As society progresses, these traditional beliefs are continually being challenged. But defying the norm isn’t easy, especially in the digital age, where breaking tradition often comes with relentless online backlash. No other public figure understands this reality quite like Olympic champion Carlos “Caloy” Yulo.

Recently, Caloy became the center of public discussion after sharing his thoughts on his parents’ potential attendance at his upcoming wedding with girlfriend Chloe San Jose during an interview with veteran journalist Karen Davila.

”For me, I think because kasal po namin ‘yun and kami po, relationship po namin ‘yun. Ayaw ko ‘yun mamantsahan pa,” the 26-year-old gymnast shared. “Madami na silang ginawa na pinatawad ko na and hanggang doon na lang din po. So, hindi po. Gusto ko sa amin lang po ‘yun.”

Following the interview, social media was quickly flooded with mixed reactions. Many criticized the athlete, calling him “arrogant” and “ungrateful,” with some even warning him that he would face karma in the future.

Breaking toxic cycles

Despite the online criticism, many netizens—particularly from younger generations—commended Caloy’s courage to stand up for his boundaries and personal peace.

“I just love when Gen Zs are strong enough to break traditional toxic Pinoy culture. Kahit na i-bully pa sila ng mga boomers,” one comment read.

Others resonated deeply with his story, defending him from critics by highlighting the emotional weight behind his choice.

“No one will ever truly understand an anak na nagalit, nasaktan, o lumayo sa mga magulang, not unless you experienced it yourself… Hindi lahat ng anak na nananahimik ay masama. Sometimes, they’re just tired of being hurt by the people who are expected to make them feel safe,” a user commented on the podcast episode. “May mga anak na matagal nang nagtitiis… Pero darating din minsan yung point na mapapagod ka. And when that happens, people will only see the child’s reaction, not the years of pain, disappointments, misunderstandings, and things that happened before that reaction.”

So happy for them that they’re able to withstand the cruelty of social media,” another user echoed.

A longstanding feud

This isn’t the first time Caloy’s strained relationship with his family made headlines. The public fallout blew up in 2024, when his historic double-gold win at the Paris Olympics was overshadowed after his mother, Angelica Yulo, shared a Facebook post supporting his Japanese rival.

The issue escalated when Angelica confirmed in a radio interview that she and Caloy were not on good terms, blaming his girlfriend.

In response, the two-time Olympic champion posted a TikTok video on August 6, 2024, addressing the allegations directly. He revealed that his mother had withdrawn money from his bank accounts without his consent, withheld cash incentives from past competitions, and disrespected his girlfriend.

Although Angelica held a press conference the following day to apologize and appeal for privacy, the public narrative had already taken a toll on the gymnast’s image.

While both sides attempted to put the conflict to rest, the damage lingered online. For many, the public image of the athlete shifted from the celebrated “Golden Boy” who made history for the country to that of a disrespectful son who chose his relationship over his family.

Yet, beyond the negative public perception, Carlos Yulo’s choice represents more than personal family drama—it marks a defining moment for a generation refusing to tolerate toxic dynamics under the guise of tradition.

By choosing his peace over blind compliance, Caloy and fellow Gen Zs are rewriting the script on familial loyalty in the Philippines, proving that honoring oneself and setting firm boundaries can coexist with respect, even if it means breaking away from long-held cultural norms.
