During the final lap of the 500-meter event, a competitor from Hong Kong slipped directly ahead, sending both athletes into a heavy collision. In a split second, Gonzales was struck around the chest and knee by a stray blade, forcing an immediate withdrawal from the race.
For most speed skaters, taking a skate blade near the chest is the ultimate nightmare scenario—the kind of freak incident that lingers in an athlete’s mind every time they step onto the ice. Yet, what defined Gonzales’ campaign in India was not the shock of the crash, but his refusal to let fear freeze him in place.

The student-athlete from Centro Escolar University Integrated School Makati shook off the physical toll and psychological shock, battling back to secure a remarkable 11th-place overall finish against Asia’s elite.

Gonzales had already proven his dynamic speed during the Southeast Asian Trophy 2026 – Manila Series, where he bagged the silver medal in the 500m and bronze in the 1500m, while anchoring the Philippines to podium finishes in both the men’s and mixed team relays.
Despite missing the podium in New Delhi, Gonzales still showed what truly makes an athlete great—resilience, mental fortitude, and the relentless drive to finish the race amidst every challenge.
