Cup of Joe’s Gian Bernardino Opens up About Dating Life: “I Let Myself Be Happy”

Cup of Joe vocalist Gian Bernardino is sharing a rare update on his personal life, saying he is currently dating exclusively after a long period of being single.

In a recent interview with ABS-CBN news anchor Bernadette Sembrano on YouTube, Bernardino spoke briefly about his romantic life and how his approach to relationships has shifted over time.

“I have been single for a very long time. Hanggang ngayon pa rin naman po. Part na rin po siguro ‘yun na gusto kong mag-focus sa bini-build naming career,” he said.

He added that being single did not necessarily mean closing his doors to dating.

“I’m not closing my doors naman. I let myself be happy pa rin,” he said.

Bernardino then revealed that he is currently seeing someone exclusively, noting that it is still relatively new.

“[I’m now] dating exclusively. Saglit pa lang po. Three months,” he shared.

He chose not to disclose the identity of the person he is dating, but described them in general terms.

“[That person] understands me kahit sa sarili ko na hindi ko maintindihan,” he said.

Bernardino also touched on his views on attraction, saying he does not limit himself based on gender.

“I am attracted to people regardless of their gender. It’s more about the individual’s personality. As long as I’m happy with you, [whether] you’re a man, woman, gay, lesbian, or transgender,” he said.

He also reflected on earlier experiences that have shaped how he approaches relationships today, admitting he has made past decisions he now views differently.

“I made bad decisions, rushed them, and ended up hurting not only the people that mattered but also myself. I reached a point where I hated myself for it,” he said.

He described that period as emotionally difficult, adding that it affected how he saw himself.

“It became quite tormenting. Every time I look in the mirror, I see someone na parang ang hirap mahalin,” he said.

Bernardino added that he has since been working on changing his perspective.

Kaya nagandahan ako sa perspective na you look at your bubog [as] a piece of diamond. Right now, I’m striving to get better,” he said.

Outside of relationships, Bernardino also briefly looked back on his academic background and the career shift that eventually led him to music.

He said he initially took up dentistry, influenced in part by practical considerations and expectations around stable careers.

“Art course po talaga ang gusto ko. Anything that has to do with media. Gusto ko rin pong maging filmmaker. I think common mindset ng older generation na walang pera sa arts kaya they wanted me to choose a practical course na sure-ball na kikita ka nang malaki kaya I took up dentistry,” he said.

He added that balancing work as an artist eventually became physically and mentally demanding, leading to a difficult period of adjustment.

“’Nung naging physically and mentally demanding na ‘yung work namin as artists, nag-start na kaming ma-drain… Nagapang pa rin namin ‘yun for one whole year—‘yung setup na Manila-Baguio pero nagkaroon ng breaking point,” he said.

He eventually stepped away from dentistry to focus on music full-time with Cup of Joe.
