Love ‘Crash Landing on You’? Here’s a CLOY-Inspired Korean Chicken Recipe

Chicken and beer are staples in many K-Drama shows. ‘Crash Landing on You’ is no exception to that. The highly popular series features a wide variety of dishes, but Korean fried chicken is the most memorable one. Its North Korean version may have been shared by our main couple when they first experienced their fated snow together, but many have tried to recreate its South Korean equivalent— one that is sweet, spicy and saucy.

The recipe below comes from food blogger Rizza Yenko of Eli’s Kitchen PH, whose KFC or Korean Fried Chicken is both good and spicy!

Korean Fried Chicken (KFC)

Chicken

  • 150 grams of flour
  • 150 grams of cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp of salt
  • 1/2 tsp of ground pepper
  • 1 tsp of grated ginger
  • 1 tsp of grated garlic
  • 1 and 1/2 kilo of chicken legs
  • 1/2 cup of cooking oil

Dipping Sauce

  • 70 grams of gochujang paste
  • 2 tbsp of brown sugar
  • 1 tsp of Hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp of soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp of sesame oil
  • 1 tsp of vinegar
  • 1 tsp of grated ginger
  • 1 tsp of Gochugaru red pepper flakes

Procedure

  1. Mix the flour and cornstarch in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, season your chicken with salt, pepper, ginger, and garlic. Dredge the chicken in the flour mixture, then set aside.
  3. Pour oil in a pot, and set the heat to high. Once it reaches 180C, deep-fry the floured chicken for around 9 to 12 minutes or until it’s cooked through and has a golden brown exterior. Make sure to use new oil when deep-frying.
  4. In a separate pot, combine the Gochujang paste, brown sugar, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, grated ginger, and Gochujaru red pepper flakes, and mix well. Let it cook until it comes to a boil, making sure to stir frequently. Afterwards, let it simmer for 1 to 2 minutes until it becomes glossy and sticky.
  5. Place the cooked chicken in the sauce, and toss until well-coated. Serve and enjoy!

Doesn’t this sound like a great match for your K-drama binge sesh?
