Barbara Palvin is being called the first ‘plus size’ Victoria’s Secret Angel

Victoria’s Secret recently announced a new model would be receiving her wings. Barbara Palvin officially became a Victoria’s Secret Angel last March 14. She first walked the Victoria Secret Fashion Show in 2012 but missed the few following years. 2018’s show saw her return to the stage and now she’s become the first Hungarian model to be named an Angel.

Aside from that, several people are also starting to celebrate her as a plus-size model. The company itself has made no such claims but it seems like a rather substantial subset of social media users have agreed to consider her as such. Viral posts all over the internet hail her as the first plus-size model to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel.

Several comments on the Victoria’s Secret Instagram post are enthusiastically praising her realistic figure. One top comment reads: “She deserves! Finally VS valuing models with a real body! She is gorgeous!”. Yet others point out that while she might be curvier in comparison to other VS Angels, she still retains a model figure. One user comments: “She’s 121 and 5’8 so she is pretty freaking skinny! But she has curves!”

It’s worth noting that Victoria’s Secret chief marketing officer has previously stated that the company would never hire plus-size models as it didn’t fit in with their image. While celebrating Palvin’s promotion for her less conventional body shape isn’t a bad thing, it can be harmful to label her a plus-sized model if she’s not one. It redefines standards for plus-size models and potentially takes away even more opportunities for them.
