Filipino-American cinematographer Autum Durald Arkapaw just made history at the 98th Academy Awards.

On March 15 (March 16 in the Philippines), Autumn brought home the highly coveted “Best Cinematography” award for her stellar work in Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.” For this film, she used a 65 mm film with a combination of IMAX 15-perf and Ultra Panavision 70 cameras.
Autumn bested Michael Bauman (“One Battle After Another”), Darius Khondji (“Marty Supreme”), Dan Laustsen (“Frankenstein”), and Adolpho Veloso (“Train Dreams”) for the category.

In her acceptance speech, she honored women and thanked them for their love and support throughout her journey.
“I really want all the women in the room to stand up cause I feel like I don’t get here without you guys,” she said, garnering applause from the audience. “I really, really truly meant that. I’ve felt so much love from all the women on this whole campaign.”
For this achievement, Autumn stands tall as the only woman to have ever won the Oscars for cinematography. She is also the first woman of color to win the said category.
Prior to this win, only three women have ever been nominated: Rachel Mirrison for “Mudbound” (2018), Ari Wegner in “The Power of the Dog” (2021), and Mandy Walker for “Elvis” (2022).
Moreover, she is the second Filipino-American to win an Oscar. In 2014 and 2018, Robert Lopez won an Oscar for Best Original Song for the tracks “Let It Go” (from “Frozen) and “Remember Me” (from “Coco”).
