15 Years Later, Is “Disenchanted” Still Worth Watching?

It took 15 years before the sequel to “Enchanted” was finally released. Now that Disenchanted is out, the question is: is it still worth watching?

We last saw Giselle living happily ever after, after finding her true love. However, after she moved to New York aka the land where “happily ever after” doesn’t exist, their lives just kept moving on. Even though it seems like an uncalled-for sequel (seriously, after more than a decade?), the plot felt right. A fairy tale typically ends after the wedding; but for Giselle, who lives in the real world, what happens next? Well…SPOILER ALERT! She now has to live with a baby, her husband Robert who is getting tired of his daily routine, and teenage Morgan who is having a hard time trying to fit in. If that still does not hook you in, here are five more reasons to watch Disenchanted now!

Star-Studded Cast

Of course, we all know that Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey reprise their roles as Giselle and Robert. Also back as cast members are James Marsden as King Edward and Idina Menzel as Nancy, now the Queen of Andalasia! The trailer also gave us a first look at Maya Rudolph as Malvina, with Community‘s Yvette Nicole Brown as Rosaleen and Glee‘s Jayma Mays as Ruby. It also features Gabriella Baldacchino as Morgan (Robert’s daughter), replacing Rachel Covey from the first film. Covey, however, makes a cameo in the film.

New Disney Songs

The latest original Disney movie features music by Alan Menken! The legend is a mainstay at Walt Disney Animation Studios and has won multiple Academy Awards for his scores and songs for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas. So yes, you can expect new Disney soundtrack hits that are soon to often be performed at karaoke and played over and over again at home with your children! Prepare a box of tissues too for your happy tears as Dempsey, Baldacchino, Rudolph, and Elsa–I mean, Menzel–perform their goose-bumping musical numbers!

Classic Hidden Mickeys

If you’ve been a Disney fan forever, you’ll know that Disney loves to inject some “hidden Mickeys”. To those who are clueless, it’s the “impression of Mickey Mouse placed by the Imagineers and artists to blend into the designs” of all things Disney. It has then evolved into other classic Disney characters as if every movie preexists with one another, and we all love those subtle shoutouts! Disenchanted definitely has a lot of them in it. I was waiting for something specific because, you know, Menzel is there! *Wink, wink!* After seeing the film, let us know how many Disney film references you find. 😉

Fairy Tale Cliches

A lot has changed since the first batch of Disney princesses was released. To be honest, I was scared that it may be too challenging for fairy tales to keep up with modern society. In a battle between fans and critics, I personally believe that Disney found the sweet spot! Disenchanted touches on important topics like women’s empowerment and toxic masculinity without “trying too hard” while still upholding the classic fairy tale cliches with balls, evil queens, midnight threats, and more! Not to mention that Enchanted is known for referencing classic Disney characters (even villains!) and blending in some cartoons that tickle the children inside us.

Enchanting Disney Film Experience

Overall, Disenchanted is the perfect movie for those who are craving modern stories filled with magic, moral lessons, and most importantly–a happy ending.  With all of the above-mentioned factors combined, plus the high-definition streaming via Disney+, Disenchanted definitely delivers an enchanting movie experience! I’m so glad that this sequel was released at a time when the streaming app is finally available in our country. After this, I can’t wait to watch all the Marvel series and Pixar films I missed and rewatch all the Disney classics I love!
