Sad news, K-drama fans. Song Joong-ki has filed for a divorce from his wife, Song Hye-kyo. On June 27, Song Joong-ki’s attorney officially announced that their law firm filed for a divorce on behalf of Song Joong-ki yesterday, June 26, at the Seoul Family Court.
They also released Joong-ki’s official statement where he apologized to his fans. Here is a translation of his statement from Soompi.com:
Hello. This is Song Joong Ki.
First, I’d like to apologize for delivering this unfortunate news to the many fans who love and care for me.
I have begun the process of filing for divorce from Song Hye Kyo.
Rather than denouncing one another and arguing over who is to blame, I hope that the divorce process can be wrapped up amicably.
I ask for your understanding in regards to the fact that it is difficult to discuss the details of my personal life, and I will recover from my current wounds and do my utmost as an actor to repay you through great productions in the future.
Thank you.
Meanwhile, Song Hye-kyo also released an official statement through her agency. The two have apparently cited unreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce. Her agency also asks for fans’ understanding and that they could not reveal any more details about the couple out of respect for their personal lives.
Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo first got together in 2016 during the filming of their hit drama Descendants of the Sun. They announced their engagement in July 2017 and got married almost immediately in October of the same year.
