Tacloban has gone through a lot. After the devastation of Typhoon Yolanda, the Visayan city in Leyte has been diligently working to rebuild and improve. However, despite the tragedy of many lives lost and destroyed, Tacloban has a resilient, pounding heart. Here are some reasons why Tacloban should be on your upcoming travel agenda.
6 Reasons Why Tacloban Should Be Your Next Trip
6. It has breathtaking natural beauty.
Tacloban enjoys a stunning view of the Cancabato Bay that, even during overcast, doesn’t disappoint. The water surrounding Tacloban’s stillness and serenity is so peaceful that it almost seems unreal.
You can also walk the San Juanico bridge connecting Leyte and Samar, which is so cool to experience!
5. It is very rich in history.
Tacloban is a relevant city in Philippine history, and with that comes great sight-seeing. General Douglas MacArthur’s monumental statue of his return to the Philippines is enormous and incredible to see.
Since Tacloban is also where Imelda Marcos grew up. By taking a tour of the Sto. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum, you can catch a glimpse into her life.
4. Food/Pasalubong Shopping.
Tacloban has a few specialties that make perfect souvenirs. A good example is Moron, a sticky, chocolatey rice cake made with coconut milk, wrapped and steamed in banana leaves. Not only is it inexpensive, incredibly tasty, and unique to Tacloban, but it will also fit perfectly into your luggage and stay good during your trip home.
3. There are many opportunities to learn and help out.
NGOs, charities and other organizations have bases in Tacloban which make for optimal opportunity to do some voluntourism. Just co-ordinate with an NGO of your choice by email and offer them your time and energy. While they are busy, many are willing to take you in as a visitor and helper. These experiences will help you more than you could ever help them!

2. There are great accommodations available.
ZPad Residences is just one of Tacloban’s affordable hotels near downtown and the gorgeous waterfront. Suites with private bathrooms are connected to a common room where you can socialize with others staying there (or you can just be antisocial like me and enjoy the privacy of your room). ZPad is sleek, modern and comfortable and recommended by 97% of its guests.

1. The people are extraordinary .
Filipinos are known to be polite, respectful, loving and hospitable. The Waray are all of these and more. While upholding the Filipino way of being extremely welcoming and kind, they are also very reserved. They smile constantly and use their words conservatively. If you’re about to reach your Manila ingay limit, Tacloban is a great place to enjoy a peaceful, quiet atmosphere.
