Civil engineering is everywhere, but how often do we stop to think about the people and systems behind the structures we rely on every day?
This September, UP Diliman is putting the spotlight on the modern state of engineering as the 22nd National Civil Engineering Summit (NCES) takes over the campus. Organized by the UP Association of Civil Engineering Students (UP ACES), the five-day summit will bring together thousands of students, educators, industry professionals, and aspiring engineers under the theme “Axes Redefined: Aligning Systems Towards Principled Engineering.”
The event officially begins on September 18 with Jumpstart at the UP Institute of Civil Engineering (UP ICE) Main Building. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, summit blessing, and “Grand Pakain” will welcome the faculty, staff, and UP ACES members who helped bring NCES 2026 to fruition.
Opening on September 18 is the Civil Engineering Exhibit, which will be showcased for the entire duration of the two-week event. One of the summit’s flagship attractions, the exhibit will bring the discipline’s six fields to life through artistic displays, interactive stations, and multimedia presentations, offering visitors a different look at civil engineering beyond the usual concrete, steel, and blueprints.
High school students, meanwhile, will get to test their engineering instincts at the Bridge Building Competition on September 19 at the UP ICE Main Building. Teams of three will have to build strong, economical, and visually appealing bridges using limited materials and working against the clock. The nationwide competition comes with a PHP 40,000 total prize pool, including awards for Best in Design & Craftsmanship and People’s Choice, while the top five teams in Bridge Efficiency will also receive certificates.
Want a closer look at what civil engineers actually do? ImmerCE 2026 on September 23 will open the UP ICE Compound to participants through two major experiences: the Civil Engineering Laboratory Tour and the Civil Engineering Career Fair.
The laboratory tour will feature live demonstrations, interactive activities, and a special hall showcasing advanced, industry-level stations. At the Career Fair, aspiring engineers can explore job opportunities, hear from professionals through Career Talks and Company Talks, and prepare for the workplace through Gear Up, which will feature mock interviews and career-oriented activities. New episodes of the highly anticipated online series Behind the SCEnes will also be launched.
The week’s biggest conversations will happen on September 24 at the National Civil Engineering Symposium at the UP Diliman University Theater.
Engr. Alberto Dalusung III, the Energy Transition Adviser at the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC), will discuss the Philippines’ transition toward a secure and sustainable energy future, while National Academy of Science and Technology Academician and UP ICE Professor Emeritus Dr. Guillermo Q. Tabios III will tackle the country’s approach to flood resilience.
The advocacy panel, “Where Principal Axes Converge,” will bring together industry, academic, and NGO perspectives through Engr. Frederick Francis M. Sison, Engr. Joshua Agar, and Engr. Jommer Medina. Renowned journalist and storyteller Horacio “Howie” Severino will close the program with “The Accountability Axis,” a talk on keeping progress and development anchored on the public interest.
NCES 2026 will wrap up on September 25 with the National Civil Engineering Quiz (NCEQ) at the GT-Toyota Asian Center. The longstanding competition will challenge undergraduate teams from across the Philippines through a three-phase contest covering problem-solving, analysis, and fundamental civil engineering principles, with a PHP 100,000 grand total prize pool at stake.
