6. The Little Mermaid
It’s a story that’s mostly set under the sea, but it will have a live-action movie by Universal starring Chloe Grace Moretz (who, by the way, is not a redhead). The movie is slated for 2016, but there is still no word about the director, after Sofia Coppola left due to “creative differences.” We’re not sure what that means, but her directorial style – soft lighting, girls looking out windows, rock music – must not be in line with Universal’s vision for the movie. If you want to see what a Sofia Coppola-helmed The Little Mermaid will look like, Funny or Die produced a short parody starring AnnaSophia Robb and Evan Peters.
7. Pinocchio
We hope it’s not a lie that Disney is producing a live-action movie of Pinocchio. The story of the boy-puppet whose nose grows longer every time he lies will be brought to life by Disney, with Peter Hedges (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, About a Boy) writing the story. Guillermo del Toro has been working on a stop-motion movie of Pinocchio since 2008, but we’re not sure if this is the same project. A dark Pinocchio film? Sign us up for that one.
8. Genies
This isn’t exactly an adaptation, but more of a prequel for Aladdin. In Genies, Disney will tell the backstory of a genie, although it’s not clear whether it will be the genie voiced by the late Robin Williams. The story will be written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who wrote Freddy vs. Jason and the remake of Friday the 13th. No word yet on release date.
9. Jungle Book
The 2016 live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book is still showing on the big screen, but there is already another live-action adaptation in the works. Jungle Book: Origins will be directed by Andy Serkis (an actor who has starred in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit trilogy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and will star Rohan Chand as Mowgli, Serkis as Baloo, Christian Bale as Bagheera, Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan, Tom Hollander as Tabaqui, and Cate Blanchett as Kaa. This adaptation will premiere in October 6, 2017.
10. Winnie the Pooh
Even little Pooh will get his own movie, except this live-action adaptation will feature an adult Christopher Robin. Alex Ross Perry will direct and write the adaptation.
