Your Old Checks Won’t Work in Banks Anymore—Here’s Why

Having a checkbook often feels like one of those “adulting” milestones. For many Filipinos, it’s a necessity—especially if you issue post-dated checks (PDCs) for rent, mortgages, tuition, or business payments.

However, here’s a reminder: as of July 1, 2025, banks in the Philippines have ceased accepting checks that don’t conform to the updated format mandated by the Philippine Clearing House Corporation (PCHC).

The new design, first introduced in May 2024, aims to reduce fraud, minimize errors, and expedite check clearing. While a transition period existed during which both old and new checks were accepted, it ended last July. This means non-compliant checks are now automatically rejected.

Updated check format in the Philippines

  1. Date Format – Numeric Only (MM-DD-YYYY)
    Correct: 08-21-2025
    Incorrect: 08/21/2025 or August 21, 2025

  2. Amount in Figures – Standard Number Formatting
    Correct: 172,000.00
    Incorrect: 172000 or 172.000,00

  3. Payee Line – Only One Payee Allowed
    Correct: Cash
Incorrect: Juan Dela Cruz and/or Cash

  4. Amount in Words – Mandatory and Must Match Figures
Example: One hundred seventy-two thousand pesos only

  5. Signature Box – Must Match Bank Records
Sign within the designated box. Minor overflows are acceptable as long as signatures match.

Exceptions

Some checks are not affected by the new rules, including:

  • Pre-printed checks issued before May 2024 (until fully used)

  • Warehoused post-dated checks dated before May 2024

  • Manager’s or cashier’s checks

(Still, it’s best to confirm with your bank for specifics.)

What to do if you’re still using old checks

  • Order new checkbooks from your bank that follow the updated format.

  • Double-check your payroll or recurring business templates.

  • Remind staff or household members handling checks about the changes.

Why this matters

The updated format makes check transactions safer and more efficient. With standardized details, banks can process checks more efficiently, reduce human error, and better protect against fraud.

If you haven’t made the switch yet, now’s the time. Don’t risk having your payments rejected just because you’re still using outdated checks.
