I Watched Improv for the First Time—And It Taught Me Surprising Lessons About Life and Money

Life is like a huge improv—there are always crazy twists. You can’t guarantee that everything will go according to plan, nor can you control every outcome. But with the right people and guidance, life’s unexpected waves won’t drown you. Instead, you’ll find a safety net to keep you afloat.

I recently attended the Manila Improv Festival, a vibrant celebration of improvisation where live, unscripted performances took center stage while celebrating collaboration and the willingness to listen and go with the flow.

Watching four different sets of fun yet thought-provoking improv shows made me reflect on my own experience navigating life—and even my finances. As a twenty-something slowly building my dream life, watching improv made me realize how adaptability is such an important life skill. Like how to have presence and practice quick decision-making so we can respond to life’s curveballs with more preparedness and confidence, much like improv performers.

Of course, having the right guidance and support system is essential, too. That’s why Manila Improv Festival Platinum Sponsor Sun Life, the first and longest-standing life insurance company in the Philippines, wants to educate Filipinos on financial preparedness so they can respond to life’s surprises with confidence—just like in improv.

Here are five lessons I learned about life and finances after watching improv.

1. You have to embrace the unexpected.

I was in awe of how quickly performers could create a skit from the most random prompts, like “What is the first thing you reach for in the grocery store?” or “What makes you nervous?” They could always whip up something hilarious from the most bizarre situations.

In improv, it’s natural to be caught off guard by unexpected moments. The same goes for real life. Surprises can happen, but financial preparedness gives you flexibility and the confidence to navigate them. Financial solutions, such as the ones offered by Sun Life Philippines, can help you face life’s unexpected challenges with more assurance and clarity.

2. “Yes, and…” could change your life.

The golden rule of “Yes, and…” in improv requires performers to always accept a prompt or scenario and to continuously build on it. This helps establish momentum, creating scenes that flow naturally.

Outside of improv, the “Yes, and…” mindset is something we can also apply. When faced with a challenge, we need to ask “Yes, and?” accept the situation and act on it.

Financially, this can mean acknowledging where you are today and making thoughtful choices to move you forward. Whether it’s as simple as setting aside savings each month or protecting your money through life insurance, this principle encourages us to take action and build on opportunities, helping us create positive changes in our lives.

3. Everyone needs a reliable and trustworthy partner.

Trust is vital in improv. Performers need it to build the foundations of their act and make the exchange of dialogue work. Having a partner you can rely on means you can support each other’s prompts. It’s what makes “Yes, and…” possible on stage.

In improv, trust ensures your partner catches you when you leap. The same goes in real life. A trustworthy partner can help act as a safety net, guiding you to a brighter future. That’s why Sun Life financial advisors are well-equipped with knowledge to help you be prepared for when life throws surprises your way.

Visualizing how your future can be protected and secured is much easier when you have Sun Life and their financial advisors to rely on as your partners for life.

4. You can’t control everything life throws at you, but you can be prepared.

While watching my very first improv, I realized how much preparation goes into a performance. I saw it in how the performers skillfully exchanged dialogue, flowed with every scene, and stayed composed despite unexpected prompts.

I consider myself someone who finds joy in preparing, but I also tend to be very controlling of outcomes. When things don’t go my way, I get disappointed—or worse, sidetracked from my original goals.

However, watching improv made me realize that we cannot control every variable or twist in life. What we can do, however, is prepare for the unexpected. For example, having a comprehensive financial protection plan equips you with long-term security and peace of mind, just in case life goes sideways. And when life throws you lemons, you’ll be ready to adapt and recover.

5. Being financially independent is empowering.

As I watched each set, I was amazed at how confident and empowered the performers were on stage. It was fascinating to see their eyes light up whenever they threw a relatable punchline or unexpected twist that made the crowd applaud.

Truly, confidence is not just an accessory–it’s the whole outfit! It can even empower you to navigate life’s ups and downs without being thrown off by minor setbacks. As we grow older and take decisive steps toward the lives we once dreamed of, being financially prepared allows us to create a brighter future for ourselves and our loved ones.
