Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Joker, its upcoming origin story for the classic Batman villain.

Joaquin Phoenix plays Joker. The movie is directed by Todd Phillips.
In the trailer, we get the first look of Joaquin’s depiction of the titular character – a clown and comedian from Gotham named Arthur who seems to have fallen on hard times. He’s beaten up and humiliated on the streets and in the subway, and he muses, “Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?” Over the course of the trailer, we see his descent into madness, appearing at the very end in costume as the classic villain.
Joaquin is the recent choice in a long line of actors to take on the Joker character. The list includes Heath Ledger in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Jared Leto in Suicide Squad, and Cameron Monaghan in the television series Gotham.
Joker will be released on the big screen in the US on October 4th, 2019.
