The whole internet was shook when Beyonce released Lemonade, a visual album laden with references to infidelity and revenge. No one knew what to make of it, especially since the album came out after her sister Solange attacked her husband Jay-Z in an elevator, sparking theories that she attacked him because he cheated.

Whatever this album is about, we’re thankful it exists, and Beyonce gifted us with a 15 minute performance of songs from the album at the recently-held MTV Video Music Awards. It was a sizzling performance where Beyonce sang “Pray You Catch Me,” “Hold Up,” “Sorry,” “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” and “Formation.” She even swung a baseball bat at a camera!

At the end of the night, the singer was the star of the night, winning eight out of her 11 nominations. She won Video of the Year for “Formation,” Best Female Video for “Hold Up,” Best Pop Video for “Formation,” Breakthrough Long Form Video for Lemonade, Best Direction for “Formation” (directed by Melina Matsoukas), Best Choreography for “Formation” (choreographed by Chris Grant, JaQuel Knight, and Dana Foglia), Best Editing for “Formation” (edited by Jeff Selis), and Best Cinematography for “Formation” (directed by Malik Sayeed).

Lemonade is reportedly inspired by her grandmother Agnéz Deréon and Jay-Z’s grandmother Hattie White. At White’s 90th birthday celebration, she said, “I had my ups and downs, but I always find the inner strength to pull myself up. I was served lemons, but I made lemonade.” This was included in the track “Freedom.”
