Japan’s cherry blossoms are a springtime highlight for many visitors, alongside its food, temples, and cultural experiences. Every year, travelers flock to popular spots like Ueno Park in Tokyo, Maruyama Park in Sapporo, and Hirosaki Castle in Aomori to see the sakura in full bloom.

According to the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC), cherry blossoms in 2026 are expected to start flowering as early as March 19 in Nagoya and last until May 1 in Sapporo.

JMC notes that these dates can vary depending on temperature patterns from the previous autumn. Cherry blossom buds start forming in summer, then go through a dormant phase before growing and eventually flowering. During dormancy, the buds show no visible growth. Once they begin to develop, their tips gradually turn yellowish-green.
Those planning their trips may check online for any changes.
If you don’t have a Japan visa yet, cherry blossom viewing isn’t limited to Japan. Places like Atok in Benguet, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam also offer beautiful sakura experiences during spring.
