UPDATE: Filipino Fired in Singapore Hospital After Posting Offensive Statementsย on Locals
Travel the world and you’re bound to see a Filipino wherever you go. Whether it’s neighboring Hong Kong or the far-flung countries in South America, there’s always a Filipino to greet you “Kamusta?” In Singapore, there is a large Filipino community that makes up a bigger community of migrant workers, because of a low fertility rate that resulted in Singaporeans only making 60% of the population. Despite that, the locals are not happy with the growing foreign community, who they say compete with them for jobs, housing, medical care, and in public transport.
Case in point, a Filipino nurse who was fired from a Singaporean hospital for making offensive comments on Facebook. On his Facebook page, he made three status updates calling Singaporeans “losers in their own country,” and that Filipinos “take their jobs, their future, their women” and that soon, they will “evict all Singaporean losers out of their own country.” He ended his post by saying that “Pinoys are better and stronger than ‘Stinkaporeans.'”
Tan Tock Seng Hospital found the posts, and fired the Filipino after investigating the three posts. According to the hospital:
“These comments were highly irresponsible and offensive to Singapore and religion. They have distressed members of the public and our hospital staff.
His conduct goes against our staff values of respect, professionalism and social responsibility. As a public healthcare institution, we take a very serious view and have zero tolerance on conduct that is offensive and detrimental to multi-cultural harmony in Singapore.”
At first, the Filipino nurse denied posting the status updates, saying that his account was hacked. He filed a police complaint, but he later admitted to posting the updates himself.
The hospital said that his dismissal is independent of the police investigation.
This is not the first time Singaporeans have showed their thoughts about Filipinos. Just this June, a Singaporean hate blog targeted against Filipinos was taken down by Google. The blog lists down ways to harass the Filipino community in the island country.
