8. You learn to protect yourself.

Now, protection comes in all forms and sizes so before you jump to any conclusions, this matter is all about the heart. Technically speaking, we’re only humans. We are susceptible and incredibly vulnerable to sweet gestures and sweet nothings. When someone makes us feel special, we can’t help but blush and giggle. If you’re a girl, you probably have the Prince Charming syndrome (Good for you, if you don’t! But trust me, you do). I mean, who wouldn’t appreciate the Top 10 Hugot Lines from Taylor Swift. If someone already wrote you a song, that’s probably a cue that something is brewing deep within.

Sadly, in acting, you have to act with different kinds of people. There may even be instances that you would have to act alongside a partner as a couple or if you’re unlucky, it’s a love triangle and you’re the receiving party. These are the times when you would really have to protect yourself from letting your emotions take over. It’s not that you don’t like the love team or your partner, he/she might even be your soul mate for all we know, but it’s so easy to mix up your feelings that you need to be able to have a firm grasp of who you are away from your character. 

 

9. You learn to be patient.

Patience is a virtue everyone seems to have trouble following or at least, I do. It’s not really my strong point. The thing with acting is that, you really need to be patient. It’s not even a choice. Patience is needed when you’re learning your lines, memorizing the script and finding that perfect moment in the scene.

You won’t always get the perfect shot. It will take a couple of retakes, if you’re lucky. Sometimes though, it can take all day. What’s important here is to maintain that bright attitude you’ve had from the beginning until the very end because that’s the only weapon you have. If you let go of that, you’re done.

I remember doing an impromptu with the class around the last part of our workshop and although it was a fictional set-up, it does reflect the reality of life during productions. The craziness is simply unfathomable. If you don’t have the patience for it, you’ll crumble.

 

10. You become more confident.

Now, I’m not saying I’m more confident than before because I may or may not be. I can’t really say. But after completing the workshop, it made me put myself out there and break out of my shell. I am finally comfortable of who I am and for the first time, I actually feel alive.

I guess, in one way or another, acting made us discover a different part of ourselves – something we never thought possible and someone we never thought existed. As you tap into that unlimited source of emotion, acting awkwardly in front of some friendly strangers, realizing that you are more than just a one-trick pony, you begin to let go.

And finally, you begin to love yourself. Because you never thought you can be who you’re acting out to be. You never knew because you never tried. But at that moment, you get to be the child, the teenager, the drunk, the witch, the stalker, the killer, the clown, the pursuer, the friend, the sister, the foe, the lover, the mother, the boss, the broken, the flirt and the bitch, and you know that it’s just the beginning. You realize, you can be who you want to be. All you have to do is believe it.
