Tino Suits, led by a master tailor with three decades of craftsmanship in bespoke tailoring, trained at Brioni in Italy, is delighted to announce the return of Colony Clothing’s highly anticipated trunk show. This two-day exclusive event will bring a fresh wave of fashion innovation to Manila, offering access to Colony Clothing’s spring and summer collection of 2024. Guests will also have the unique opportunity to enjoy personal styling sessions with Colony Clothing’s founder, Kozo Kawamura, by appointment only.
As Colony Clothing enters its second decade, this collection promises to be captivated by collaborations featuring Tatsuya Nakamura of Beams. Drawing inspiration from his extensive archives from the 80s and 90s and leveraging his 25 years of experience as the Creative Director of a renowned Japanese clothing brand, the collection showcases a fusion of Ivy League French, British, and American styles. Additionally, the collection highlights the exceptional 21 Micron wool from Vitale Barberis Canonico, one of the oldest Italian woolen mills.
Founded in 2013, Singapore-based Colony Clothing has established itself as a multi-label retailer that fills a unique niche with its softly tailored pieces designed for tropical climates. The brand’s East-meets-West aesthetic, coined “new colonial style” by founder Kozo Kawamura, has garnered widespread popularity in Singapore and beyond.
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Colony Clothing is marking this milestone with two global partnerships. The first collaboration features the renowned Italian fabric house Vitale Barberis Canonico (VBC). With the 21 Micron series, which offers perfect drape, crease resistance, and a dry hand, is incredibly versatile and ideal for warm tropical climates like those of Singapore and Manila. The 21 Micron collection, known for its natural stretch and relaxed resort tailoring, will also be available for bespoke suiting at Tino Suits.
The featured fabrics in the collection include:
TROPICAL IN 21 MICRON WOOL AND LINEN: A blend of 53% 21 Micron wool and 47% linen, creating a light, casual suit fabric with a unique hand and look.
MONTECARLO JACKET: A 100% wool hopsack weave, available in 54 colors, known for its breathability and suitability for summer and mid-season wear.
RUSTIC TROPICAL: A 100% wool fabric with high torsion, offering durability and versatility for both formal and informal settings.
Colony Clothing’s long-standing partnership with VBC has been facilitated through N.J. Bhagwan, a leading fabric merchant in Asia. The collaboration with Ring Jacket ensures that the ready-to-wear suiting range is tailored to fit everybody’s type and is exclusively available at Colony Clothing’s Singapore boutique and online store.
Reflecting on his journey, Kozo Kawamura shared, “Having worked at Beams and experienced a variety of fabrics from Italy and the UK, this tie-up is a bit of a homecoming for me. The collaboration with Tatsuya Nakamura has been a learning opportunity, and it has significantly influenced our product evolution. Introducing Mr. Nakamura to Singapore last year allowed him to understand our brand’s concept deeply, contributing to the vibrant and eclectic 90s-inspired collection we are presenting.”
A strong 90s inspiration comes through in the collection; bright colors and eye-catching patterns are interspersed with more modest, muted pieces, giving an eclectic vibe. Kawamura explains that the design process began with archival fabrics from the decade, and he was surprised at how well these materials worked when made into modern pieces, including one of Colony Clothing’s signature poolside shirts.
In the collection, clothes are made with Japanese fabrics produced in Hamamatsu and Ichinomiya. Speaking on the choice of materials, Nakamura shared, “To reproduce the 80s and 90s-style fabrics that are rarely seen in the market today, it was necessary to leverage the high-quality techniques of Japanese fabric makers.”
