This September’s “Full Corn Moon” is a special one, and here’s why

On September 2, a Full Corn Moon will light up the night sky. According to Farmersalmanac.com, this moon is special because it only happens once every three years.

According to the almanac, this full moon’s name “is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested.”

The almanac states that at most times, the September full moon is called the “Harvest Moon” because it’s the full moon that happens closest to the autumn equinox.

However, every third year, the full moon that happens in October is even closer to the equinox, making September’s full moon a “Corn Moon” instead. Moreover, because of this phenomenon, there will be two full moons happening this October 2020.
