This carinderia is providing food for thousands of front liners, jeepney drivers, and homeless people

Amidst the uncertainty of the quarantine and the pandemic that is COVID-19, many of us face uncertainty and anxiety on the day-to-day. But no one fears more than those who are at the front lines and those who have lost their livelihoods because of the pandemic. Many times, they’re left to fend for themselves.

But this carinderia in Sampaloc, Manila, has decided to change that. Instead of focusing on just business as usual, they’ve given their time, hearts, and energy to feeding our front liners, our jeepney drivers, street dwellers, and the homeless who’ve been put into shelters for the time being to try and help out.

They’ve been cooking for them and raising funds for them to make sure everyone is well-fed and cared for.

When asked about the initiative, they talked about how they began it when UST Hospital received its first case of COVID-19. They’ve always been a popular carinderia in Sampaloc and have catered to UST students for over 10 years.

Yung nalaman namin situation sa UST agad kami nagpakain ng breakfast, lunch and dinner for 75packs per meal. Showing na by giving back sa support ng Thomasian community sa 14 years. So we posted it here and somehow nag viral. Pinost din siya ng mga media outlets online. Maraming nagpakita ng support and gusto “mag ambag. So 2weeks kami nag isip if mag push kami dahil yung health namin yung nakasalalay dahil walang aalalay samin kasi pinauwi na namin nung nag suspend ng class around feb. March to may (Phase I) around 180k na collect namin tapos 3000pax napakain namin for Medical Frontliners, street dwellers, homeless sa rescue facility, mga nasa check points and delivery riders. June August (Phase II) collab w/ erwan Heussaff and Lark (App) nasa 300k budget then 2500pax para sa citihub tenants that are mostly blue collared workers. August – October (Phase III) almost 200k din then nasa 4k pax naman same as phase I yung naging target. So eto na yung narating ng drive namin sa tulong nadin ng mga individuals na nag donate and mga private company na inaaccept yung proposal ko for sponsorships.

Reggie Piadoche and his family have been working hard to provide for their community and even beyond. He operates the food drive by sending proposals and promoting the initiative and his parents do the palengke work and packaging. His mother and lola do the cooking, as well. So it’s really a family affair. Despite his parents becoming COVID positive, they recovered and continued to do their work.
