It looks like Filipinos are getting global recognition—at least, according to a supposed dictionary update. On April 1, 2026, reports began circulating online claiming that the Oxford English Dictionary has officially added the Filipino phrase “bababa ba” to its growing list of culturally specific entries.

Commonly heard in jeepneys, buses, elevators, and pretty much any shared space with unclear direction, bababa ba? is a question asked to check whether someone is going down—or, in many cases, simply to figure out what’s happening at all.
A peculiar anecdote circulating online suggests that the phrase may have entered the dictionary under unusual circumstances. According to reports, an Oxford Dictionary editor reportedly got momentarily confused while navigating a crowded elevator in Manila and was helped by a local who calmly asked, “Bababa ba?” Allegedly impressed by the phrase’s efficiency and versatility, the editor later nominated it to be included in the dictionary.
“I was struck by how much meaning and clarity could be packed into just two words. It’s simple, practical, and distinctly Filipino—exactly the kind of cultural nuance we aim to capture in the dictionary,” the editor said.
Many netizens were quick to celebrate the addition, with some joking that it was “more versatile than any GPS” and “the only phrase you need to survive both commuting and office buildings.”
The update also mentioned other everyday expressions like “para po,” “bayad po,” and “sukli,” highlighting what it described as the “quiet coordination system” among Filipinos in shared spaces.
