The Fault in Our Stars: Are You an Annoying TFIOS Viewer?

Last night, I finally had the chance to watch The Fault in Our Stars. We were preoccupied with the preparations for Kasalang Filipino 2014 sa Subic happening in the said mall, so I didn’t really expect that I would still get the chance to see the film. I did, though, and I have to thank friends from Harbor Point for reserving our seats for that.

So, after the closing of the second day of Kasalang Filipino 2014 sa Subic, we went straight to Cinema 4 and lined up for The Fault in Our Stars. In no time, we were allowed to go in and the ball started rolling.

I was so excited. I read the book last year and as a creative writing major, I was really impressed with the novel; not just because it was a love story but also because it was well-written. Its characters were well-designed and their voices were so distinct that I could hear the difference between one character’s voice from the other.

The film was an epic experience, in general, too… if it weren’t for the people inside the theatre who caused stress to other people in the movie house trying to enjoy the film, that is.

Are you one of these annoying people? Are you one of them? Know the signs!

The Fault in Our Stars: Are You an Annoying TFIOS Viewer?

1. You know the book so well. So, inside the theater, you cannot help but discuss every scene with your seatmate and what things mean in the film.

Let me tell you something: you are not alone. Chances are, the majority of the people inside the theater that you are in also know the novel well. So I suggest that you take the discussion part outside of the theater and just keep silent to allow other people to concentrate as they watch.

2. You memorized each line in the book, so you actually recite them in chorus with the characters.

Crazy about the lines in the book? You should have auditioned for a role in the film. That way, you can freely recite and act out lines taken from the novel and not become a reason for distraction to other moviegoers who simply love to hear the dialogue clearly. Also, be nice to those who might have not read the book yet and are merely giving the movie a shot. They need to understand things on their own.

3. You over-react all the time.

Enough of the feels. I know you are getting carried away and I also understand how hot that bed scene was, but please keep your cool and remember theater etiquette. It’s that simple. People did not pay for movie tickets just to hear you laugh as if there were no tomorrow or cry loudly as if your personal Gus was dying.

4. You did not do your homework so, inside the theater, you keep on asking your companion what is happening.

You should have read the book first or simply Googled its premise before you bought a ticket. This way, you won’t have a hard time understanding the unlit cigarette between Gus’ teeth, The Imperial Affliction, and other things about the film. Also, let me tell you something: even if you haven’t read the book yet, you can still behave properly. A friend of mine did not read the book prior to seeing the movie, but she was never noisy inside the theatre nor did she ask about things in the film. She just watched it, tried to comprehend it in silence, and reserved her questions for after the movie.

The Fault in Our Stars was indeed one of the most-awaited films in the country in this year. Seeing it on-screen was a great opportunity, though its effectiveness as an adaptation may be a different story.

Plus, it can be a more epic movie experience when you see it in a theater with good facilities such as Ayala Harbor Point Mall. So please, please, please– be a nice moviegoer. Be nice to others who want to concentrate as they see the film. These people might have waited for it since forever. Plus, who knows? Some of them might have skipped lunch or saved money from their small school allowance just to be able to buy a ticket. Be considerate; world peace.

Definitely, the world isn’t. So don’t think people would just grant your wish and allow you to ruin their #tfious movie experience.

So When in Manila or anywhere in the world and thinking of watching The Fault in Our Stars, try not to be one of these annoying moviegoers.
