You Have My Permission to Laugh: The Dark Knight Rises Memes

This is part of WhenInManila.com’s continuing coverage of The Dark Knight Rises. See part 1 here.

When In Manila and around the world, the Dark Knight Rises is setting the internet on fire! The latest and final installment in the Brothers Nolan Bat Trilogy is exceeding all expectations and RAISING the bar for movie adaptations of comics–not to mention filmmaking–to an unprecedented level!

People are lining up to see it again and again, articles, reviews, and blog posts are flooding the world wide web, along with that annoying and unavoidable (unless you don’t go online) phenomenon: The meme.

First coined by the famous evolutionary biologist, author, and atheist, Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene, by shortening “mimeme”, which is derived from the Greek word mimema (“something imitated”), memes are defined as “an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture.” source. It is, unfortunately, on the basis of its very nature, inescapable.

Unfortunately, it is also a huge waste of time. The thousands of hours of productivity lost on sites like facebook, tumblr, icanhazcheezburger, 9gag, etc, could have instead been devoted to fixing the European financial crisis or finding a way to reverse global warming. Or even learning French like you’ve been telling yourself you would one day.

So as a public service from WhenInManila.com, we’ve compiled the best ones out there in order to help you get it out of your system as early possible, so you can get back to more important things. Like facebook.

Enjoy.

Most of these gems were found/made here. The Ned Stark and Halle Berry memes are by the author.
